A very fitting Baptismal gown for a special little girl. After gently disassembling the dress she created a baby girl Baptismal gown and a baby boy Baptismal outfit.

Every part of the wedding dress is reworked into the gown. The delicate work around the arms of the gown are from the eyelets which the dress laced up in back. Even the clear snaps on the back were re-worked from the snaps on the wedding dress.

The simple but so perfect, baby boy Baptismal outfit.

Chicago was a blast for Cathy and I! We found some really unique one of kind items to add to the store. We've been busy unpacking and rearranging the store for fall, but we're all caught up now and I thought I'd share some of the cool stuff we found!

New line of jewelry from a Artist located in Chicago. Carrie Notari of Notari Studio, has taken her love of art and photography and incorporated into wearable art. We love her necklaces because they are one of kind and made from recycled materials. She is busy hand crafting our order and hopefully we'll be receiving them soon!

Much of Carries artwork comes from graffiti taken from the Berlin Wall. The wearable art above is actually a mini domino tile!

Recycled Bottle caps make a unique necklace! These are my personal favorite!

Charming glass tiles with art work on one side and inspirational word on the other side, very unique one of a kind!

Look for this in the store and online, I'm sure they wont last long!

Cathy's been busy on the Pfaff and our bags are finally done!

They turned out great, so great we want to make one for you too! We picked out some great fabric enough to make 5 more, so keep an eye in the store and on the website for theses wonderful one of a kind bags!

The pattern we used is a Amy Butler original, and we are obsessed with anything she does! We love her fabric and her patterns, check out her website and get inspired!

When our FedEx guy delivered a box to the shop today we thought for sure it was the framed verses that customers have been patiently waiting for.....no such thing today! Since this is Robyn's first full holiday season with us, imagine her surprise when the contents were CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS for the coming season. We don't particularly like the seasons to fly by so quickly, but in retail we always have to be thinking, creating, and ordering at least six months ahead.

This year, we're just so excited about what we've found for our customers at the gift shows we've attended. This is just the beginning....I don't dare post photos or anyone looking at our blog will think we've gone completely wacko. But soon we'll be giving you all a sneak preview.

And yes, Fall treasures are also arriving....

This is the Story of The Little Red Hen

The Little Red Hen was 'born' 20-some years ago and 'lived' in an old Victorian house in Mitchell, SD. In these early days, Gloria the owner sold handmade wares from area consignors. I (Cathy) bought the shop in February, 2000. I was a stay-at-home mom and self-proclaimed fabric floozy. It was always my dream to own such a shop. I knew next to nothing about retail business, but I was as determined as The Little Red Hen that my shop was named after.

Gradually adding retail treasures of a primitive nature to compliment the handmade items, I moved the shop to a Main Street location in March, 2003. My husband who calls himself 'The Rooster' even built a loft in that store unlike anything I'd ever imagined. Well, that little shop was not to be......After just a year on Main Street, we lost everything in a fire.

I guess we're never given more challenges and difficulties than we can handle; there was no doubt that I'd rebuild my business, even though it was to be in a very tiny temporary location. Less than two months after the fire, The Little Red Hen was again a part of Main Street Mitchell. And good things do indeed come to those who wait! In June, 2005 my 'Rooster' and I bought a building on Main Street and with the help of dear friends and our children The Little Red Hen has her place of honor by the front door to greet all of our guests.

Robyn joined our little 'henhouse' in 2007. She's my web-mistress and my right hand! Along with Joan, Kathy and Micki we try to make shopkeeping, rearranging, designing, and window-decorating lots of fun! I just couldn't do it without these girls!

Trends and styles change....we offer our customers the very best in Countrypolitan treasures---that is, the warmth and comfort of home blended with urban sophistication. We still carry a line of very high quality handmade gifts and goods, some even made right in our very own sewing room.

The cash and carry was a lot of work but you know us at the Little Red Hen we always fit time in for some fun! Cathy and I are both fabric floozies so we found a couple quilt shops along the way.

The first quilt shop was Stitchers Crossing they had lots of great fabric, yarn, cross stitch patterns, home decor fabric, and much more! We picked up a Amy Butler bag pattern, "The Chelsea bag" and some great fabric, watch for these bags in the store soon!

We made one more stop in Onalaska, at A Stitch in Time. Cathy and I were in search of a back pack style pattern to use when we go to Chicago Market in July, no such luck for us, instead we found a great messenger style bag pattern from Amy Butler of course! We both picked out some super cute fabric. The bags are on top of our to do list and as soon as we get a break Cathy will whip those up!

What's new this week at The Little Red Hen!

We've been busy this week here at The Little Red Hen. Tourists are making their way into town and we're finally starting to get some nice weather! Spring is in full bloom for us and we have some great finds that are new to the store this week!

Lasting Lite Electric Candles: Alternative to a open flame, these flameless candles fit great in any room or decor. Candle Sleeve fits onto an electric base. (6"x x4")

Our very own Private Label Salsas, Jalapeno Jams, and Dips have arrived! New and fresh for summer-- try all of our great salsas; Peach Pineapple, Mango Peach Tequila, or Black Bean. Great for any BBQ or get together try our Jalapeno jams: Raspberry Jalapeno, Sweet Pepper Jalapeno, and Pineapple Mandarin. Easy dips and soup starters will make evening meals a cinch: Veggie, Chili, Pomodoro, Dill and Spinach, and everybody's favorite Bacon.

Easy Recipe for Raspberry Jalapeno Jam:
As a baste:

Spread over chicken breast or game hens and bake 45 minutes at 350'F

Spoon over beef brisket [5 to 7lbs.]. Cover with foil and bake 300' F for 4 hours. Next, remove foil and baste with sauce juices. Bake an additional hour at 350'F. Serve. [DELICIOUS!)

As an hors d'oeuvre--

Spoon over cream cheese and serve with crackers.

Spoon over Brie cheese and bake 15 minutes at 425'F. Serve with crackers.

Also Great with bagels or waffles!
